THREE NEW MEMBERS TO
OAK RIDGE SITE SPECIFIC ADVISORY
BOARD
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the appointment of three new members to
the Oak Ridge Site Specific Advisory Board. The Board is a
federally-chartered citizens’ panel that provides recommendations to the DOE’s
Oak Ridge Environmental Management Program.
“We welcome the experience brought by those new to the
Board. Their insight helps us make informed decisions reflecting citizen
input from the community,” said Gerald Boyd, DOE Oak Ridge Office. “The
work that this Board performs for Oak Ridge and surrounding communities is
important, and the time volunteered by all who serve is a valuable contribution
to our environmental cleanup program.”
Betty Jones of Oak Ridge is employed by B&W Technical
Services Y-12 as a chemical operations relief supervisor at the Y-12 National
Security Complex. She holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in
Environmental Health Technology from Roane State Community College and a
Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from Tusculum College.
She also has supplemental training in environmental
management and occupational safety and health administration laws and
regulations.
Edward Juarez is a retired utility worker who was employed
at the commercial Fermi 2 nuclear reactor site in Michigan for approximately 15
years as a trainer, outage management expeditor, and maintenance senior
planner. He supervised nuclear simulator training and spent numerous hours
in training in a wide variety of nuclear subjects and disciplines.
He received his Associate in Applied Science degree and
his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Madonna University in
Michigan. Juarez earned a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from
the University of Detroit.
Juarez has been a member of the Knights of Columbus and
LaSed Hispanic Community Development. He lives in Loudon.
Maggie Owen is employed by Safety and Ecology Corporation
RADCON Alliance as a health physics supervisor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
and Y-12 National Security Complex. For the last 13 years, she has worked
on the Oak Ridge Reservation in deactivation and demolition of radiological
facilities, surveillance and maintenance, emergency response, and as a health
physics specialist assigned to the Melton Valley Closure
Project.
Prior to moving to Tennessee, Owen worked as
a health physics technician providing support for reactor refuel
outages in commercial nuclear facilities.
She is a member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the
Health Physics Society and the National Registry of Radiation Protection
Technologists. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Political
Science from Francis Marion University in South Carolina. She is an Oak
Ridge resident.
All of the new members were seated on the Board in July
upon appointment by DOE’s Office of Environmental Management in
Washington.
Board meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month
at 6 p.m. at the DOE Information Center, 475 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak
Ridge. Meetings of the Board and its committees are open to the public,
