Nuclear Fuel Supply

With the growing need for clean and reliable energy sources, people are once again debating nuclear energy as a viable solution.  Oak Ridge’s Office of Nuclear Fuel Supply (NFS) is a pivotal component within the nation’s nuclear landscape, overseeing diverse nuclear energy operations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Paducah, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio.
Our NFS division manages a cooperative agreement with the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) that facilitates the deployment of new, cost-effective, advanced enrichment technology on a national scale.  This partnership ensures a steady domestic supply of enriched uranium for the United States’ naval fleet and commercial power industry, while developing new methods for enriching uranium.

Our employees help continue operations at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, the last enrichment site in the county, until USEC completes the design and construction of the American Centrifuge Plant in Portsmouth, Ohio.  This new facility will conduct the most efficient enrichment process in the world for future naval fleets and power plants.
