The Veterans Support Group (VSG) provides representation and plans observances as appropriate for Veterans activities or events and coordinate observances with Oak Ridge Offices (ORO) management. The VSG will advise and assist Management in matters that pertain to the employment, advancement, and retention of Veterans who are Department of Energy ORO Federal government employees and/or applicants for Federal service.
Membership & Participation
Participation in the VSG is open to all Federal and Contractor employees who have served honorably in any of the United States Military Branches and have with an interest in recognizing the contributions of and advancing opportunities for Veterans. The VSG Manager chairs all activities of the VSG and provides for other officers or volunteers as deemed necessary by the VSG members or the VSG Manager. The VSG Program Manager or his/her designee serves as a liaison to the EEO Advisory Council as a voting member.
Provide input in the development of the annual OR Affirmation Employment Plans for women, minorities, the physically challenged, and Veterans and in the development of associated program budgets.
Provide recommendations on continuing implementation of the ORO Equal Opportunity and Veterans Preferences as mandated by law in all areas of employment, including recruitment, hiring, placement, training, awards, promotion, retention and other terms and conditions of employment.
Identify barriers to the employment and full utilization of Veterans in the ORO workforce and recommend initiatives to overcome such barriers.
Develop and/or assist in the execution of programs to commemorate the contributions for Veterans in general, to recognize the contributions of ORO Veterans, to increase the awareness of Veterans’ benefits and rights, and to provide feedback to ORO management on the effectiveness and progress of ORO programs and plans affecting Veterans. The VSG Program Manager reports administratively to the Diversity Programs and Employee Concerns Manager.
Frequency of Meetings
The VSG should meet quarterly or more frequently as required. The Program Manager is responsible for establishing the time and place for the meetings and for notifying members of such meetings. Participation in the VSG is recognized as official business and, as such, may be conducted during official duty hours.
