A new booklet giving tips on how people can improve the quality of their health care, including avoiding medical errors, is now available from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The guide focuses on key health care decisions people typically makes, such as choices about doctors, hospitals and treatments. The federal agency stresses that people who are more actively involved in all their health care decisions tend to get better results and feel more satisfied. The booklet recommends that patients keep asking questions until they understand the answers, and to not assume that no news is good news when it comes to an x-ray or a laboratory test. The guide also says that if surgery is needed, make sure that patient, doctor and surgeon agree on what will be done. The booklet, entitled "Improving Health Care Quality: A Guide for Patients and Families" is available at no cost at IMPROVING HEALTH CARE QUALITY or by calling 1-800-358-9295 (410-381-3150 for international calls).
