DOE PAYROLLS TOTAL $751 MILLION FOR YEAR 2002
 

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The U.S. Department of Energy today reported that the payroll for federal and contractor employees at the Department=s Oak Ridge facilities totaled $751,763,365 in 2002.

Federal and contractor employment at the Oak Ridge facilities totaled 13,101 employees as of December 31, 2002.  Approximately 87 percent of these employees, 11,427, live in Knox, Anderson, Roane, and Loudon counties, with an annual payroll of $675,610,777, or 90 percent of salary total.  Knox County residents working at Oak Ridge facilities totaled 4,950 and earned $312,702,896 in 2002.  Oak Ridge residents working at the Department’s facilities (living in both Anderson and Roane Counties) totaled 2,089 with a combined payroll of $136,746,850.

Primary Department of Energy (DOE) contractors during 2002 included:  UT-Battelle, Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC, BWXT Y-12, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, BNFL Inc., and Science Applications International Corporation.  Federal workers employed by Oak Ridge Offices (ORO), Y‑12 Site Office of the National Nuclear Security Administration), and the Department’s Office of Science and Technical Information are also included in these statistics. 

Data supplied by the Bechtel Jacobs Development Company indicate that since Bechtel Jacobs began its job creation efforts, a total of 5,097 jobs have been generated.  The FY 2002 payroll associated with these jobs totaled $161,468,840.  The Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee (CROET) also involved in job generation efforts for the local area, contributed to the creation of 336 jobs in FY 2002.

During Calendar Year 2002, contracts and procurement associated with the Department’s operations in Oak Ridge totaled $765,010,043 in obligated funds (money actually spent on a given contract during the year).

ORO is responsible for major DOE programs in science, environmental management, national security, and uranium programs.  Major facilities in Oak Ridge include:  East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, and the American Museum of Science and Energy.
