TENNESSEE SCIENCE BOWL
SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 26

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - Twenty-four high school teams from across the state will compete in the annual Tennessee Science Bowl from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, February 26, on the Blount County campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

The all-day event’s major sponsors are the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge Offices, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, Pellissippi State Technical Community College and the Knoxville News Sentinel. A list including other sponsors is provided as an attachment (see Attachment 1).

“The exchange of math and science knowledge among our youth at this competition is phenomenal,” said Gerald Boyd, Manager of DOE’s Oak Ridge Offices.  “This type of educational competition is a win-win result for all involved, and we are honored to be a part of it.”

The event is an academic competition featuring teams of students representing various Tennessee high schools (see Attachment 2).  According to competition rules, each team has four players, one alternate and a coach.  Questions during the event focus on the disciplines of astronomy, chemistry, biology, earth and general science, mathematics, and physics.

The team placing first in the Tennessee Science Bowl receives a $1,000 cash prize for their school, a first-place trophy, and an all-expense-paid trip to compete (with more than 60 other teams from across the nation) in the DOE National Science Bowl from April 28 to May 2 in Washington, D.C.  Trophies are also awarded to each of the following teams who take home a cash prize:  the second place team receives $750; the third place team receives $500; the fourth place team receives $250; and the winner of the civility award receives $100.

The National Science Bowl has been endorsed by the National Education Association of Secondary School Principals and the American Federation of Teachers.  Grand prizes for the national bowl will be announced at a future date.
