TENNESSEE SCIENCE BOWL
WINNERS ANNOUNCED

MARYVILLE, Tenn.
- Oak Ridge High School Team 2 from Oak Ridge took home the top honor by winning Saturday’s annual Tennessee Science Bowl.

Twenty-two high school teams from across the state participated in the all-day academic competition, which was sponsored by the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge Offices, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, Pellissippi State Technical Community College and the Knoxville News Sentinel.

“Congratulations to this year’s winners.  They demonstrated an amazing knowledge of math and science,” said Gerald Boyd, Manager of DOE’s Oak Ridge Offices.  “It is exciting to see such interest in this competition.  We wish this team well as they travel to the National Science Bowl.”

As the No. 1 team, Oak Ridge High School from Oak Ridge, received a $1,000 cash prize for their school, a first-place trophy and an all-expense-paid trip to compete with more than 60 other teams from across the nation in the DOE National Science Bowl from April 28 to May 2 in Washington, D.C.

Trophies were also awarded to each of the following teams that took home a cash prize.  The second place team, Cookeville High School from Cookeville, received $750; third place team, Maryville High School Team 1 from Maryville, received $500; fourth place team, Farragut High School Team 1 from Knoxville, received $250; and the winner of the civility award, Crockett County High School from Alamo, received $100.

The Tennessee Science Bowl took place on the Blount County campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Maryville.  It is one of 64 competitions being held throughout the nation from January to March 2005.  These competitions have been endorsed by the National Education Association for Secondary School Principals and the American Federation of Teachers.  Grand prizes for the national bowl will be announced at a future date.
