Gerald Boyd (left), DOE Oak Ridge Office Manager, presents John Lexo and Mike Pauly of DEMCO Inc. with an award for the safe work performance by their employees at the David Witherspoon Inc. 901 Site in South Knoxville.  The award was the result of over 40,000 work hours without a lost-time injury for building demolition and debris removal along with more than 50,000 miles logged without a transportation incident.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office has recognized contractor DEMCO Inc. for outstanding safe work performance in building debris and removal at the David Witherspoon Inc. 901 Site in South Knoxville.

Oak Ridge Office Manager Gerald Boyd recognized employees for this accomplishment on Wednesday at the site.

“The work performed by DEMCO employees was flawless,” Boyd said. “They worked over 40,000 hours without a lost-time injury to demolish buildings at the site and transported over 500 dump truck loads of debris.”

The transportation of this material totaled over 50,000 miles from the South Knoxville site off Old Maryville Pike to the Oak Ridge Environmental Management Waste Management Facility.  All material was safely transported without a single accident.

At the recognition, DEMCO thanked the Department of Energy for the opportunity to exceed both safety and operations expectations.  “I am proud of our on-site management and workforce team accomplishments,” said Mike Pauly, Corporate Director of Safety.  “DEMCO’s key to safety excellence is the core value that safety is an integral part of all aspects of the project.”

DEMCO is the second recipient recognized in a new initiative by the Oak Ridge Office to highlight safe work performance on the Oak Ridge Reservation by both prime contractors and subcontractors.  The company is a subcontractor to Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC for cleanup work at the 901 Site.

“Our plan is to highlight contractor organizations that place a priority on safety and recognize the employees for working safely,” said Boyd.  “This is a priority at the Oak Ridge Office and we will recognize accomplishments like those demonstrated by DEMCO as they are achieved.”
